Phonemic Awareness
Phonemic Awareness:
These assessments were found on turtlediary.com, pinterest.com, and spelfabet.com from Australia. These are designed to be used with children ranging in grades from pre-k to first grade and should take about five to ten minutes to complete if giving the assessments as a small or whole group; less if given individually. These assessments are used to measure the student’s ability to rhyme and notice changes in the words given. Phonemic awareness is extremely similar to Phonological awareness which is found on the next page. These assessments are mainly used as informal formative assessments to gauge where the students are at before or after teaching a lesson, this will help the teacher choreograph the lesson plan around what the students need to learn or if the lesson needs to be repeated. The first two assessments given can be given as a workstation and then reviewed by the teacher. The third however, needs to be done orally with the teacher either in small group or individually.
