Onset/Rime
The assessment above and to the left is a formative, informal assessment geared toward Pre-K and Kindergarten. This assessment should only take about 10 minutes for the students to complete in small groups. However, it will need to be closely monitored in order to determine who is doing the matching of the cards. These cards will be laminated for the students to match so that they can understand the onset of a word and the rime of the word. There is a picture on the cards to also facilitate with their understanding and accuracy. The second assessment is similar to the one on the left; the difference is that the onset is different but the rime rhythms, they are part of the same word family. The third assessment is my personal favorite. It gives the student the name and a picture to help them understand the breakdown of the words. They have to separate the onset and rime on plug them into the graph. This assessment should only take the students about 10 minutes and should be completed one on one with the teacher for accuracy. It can be used as a summative assessment after the unit and can also be a formal assessment. However, it can be used as an informal assessment to see where your students stand in their understanding on onset and rime.
